What is the course about?
This exciting 1 year course is designed to equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to enter a career within the uniformed public services. The careers include: the police, fire service, army, navy, RAF, prison service, ambulance service and customs and excise.
You will study a range of interesting subjects some theoretical and some practical. You will also have the opportunity to attend a 5 day Army residential as part of your studies to learn new skills such as team working, problem solving and leadership skills .You should expect to regularly participate in fitness activities as part of the course, as well as enrichment activities. You will take part in a number practice navigation walks locally and in Wales. Your 3 day camping expedition will be in the Lake District where you get the opportunity to demonstrate your camp craft skills and navigate at night. Guest speakers from public services visit us at the college and you will also have some opportunities to visit them.

We have developed excellent links with local uniformed and emergency services and organise exciting trips and visiting speakers. All students have the opportunity to take part in residential trips. In 2016 BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Uniformed Services achieved a 100% pass rate.
What will my timetable look like?
- You will be in College for 4 days a week and also have a study day.
- During that time you will spend 3 hours in English GCSE and 3 hours in Math GCSE unless you have already passed them.
- You will have a 1.5 hour gym session where you can develop your level of fitness in preparation for joining the public service you desire to join. This practical session also enables you to develop a fitness plan, leadership and skills in fitness instruction that will be used to form part of the assessment for unit 1 and 5.
- You will also have a 1 hour tutorial session with your Personal Tutor who will support you to develop the skills to prepare you for the world of work. They will also have 1:1 time slots to help you set goals on your individual learning plan and keep you on target to exceed your minimum target grade.
A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades A*- D or numerical equivalent including a grade 3 in English Language.
Do I need to buy any equipment or kit?
You will need stationary, memory stick and a folder. Uniform Services/Sports kit (Details will be given out at enrolment)
You will also need to ensure you have kit for your navigation and expedition units. You will need a waterproof jacket, walking boots and a standard size rucksack.
You may also wish to purchase Edxcel, BTEC Level 2, Public Services book published by Pearson.
What will this course lead on to?
Most students progress onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Uniformed Services or Fitness Instructor Certificate, but some students go directly into one of the services.
